We hope you are enjoying this great new year. Here in British Columbia, the beautiful Fraser Valley is awakening for spring, with willows and cherry blossoms bursting into warm, sunny days. It's time to get outside whenever possible to soak up natural source vitamin D from the sunshine!

We have been reflecting on the precious freedoms that we still enjoy. We have the freedom to think and choose for ourselves, especially in the area of self-health. This is an amazing window of opportunity. Who knows how long this will last? Just last week the US Supreme Court gave "FDA approved" medical device suppliers immunity from victim lawsuits from their defective and dangerous products. The Court's first case this week is looking to have the Court extend this protection to drug manufacturers as well. It looks like Big Pharma and Big Medicine are getting ever bolder in their attacks on our health, and our rights to protection from their dangerous and unsafe products.

And now the drug merchants of Big Pharma are declaring war on motherhood itself!

Four years ago today, GlaxoSmithKline had not yet warned of Paxil heart defects. The FDA had not warned of suicides caused by Zoloft and other SSRIs, or homicides caused by antidepressant drugs.

One-week old Manie was in a 12 hour surgery, the first open heart surgery in a series of many surgeries to come.

I had a normal pregnancy with Manie. I even had a couple of ultrasounds done while I was pregnant with Manie. There were no clues that Manie had a rare heart defect. I had already 3 perfectly healthy kids and did not expect for Manie to be any different.

As soon as Manie was born he began to turn blue. The more he cried the more he turned blue. Our doctor did not know what was wrong with Manie. The doctor thought that it might be his heart or his lungs.

Manie was flown to a hospital an hour and a half away from where we live. I had to stay at the hospital where I had Manie. The doctors called me when Manie arrived and told me Manie had transposition of the great arteries.

I was told that Manie had to have a procedure done to save his life. The doctors went through the artery on the inside of Manie's right leg. The doctors snaked a balloon all the way through the artery to Manie's heart. Once the doctors were in Manie's heart they blew the balloon up and ripped a hole in Manie's heart.

In the days following the surgery Manie's leg and foot started to turn a dark purple. The doctors told us that Manie may have to have his leg amputated because the procedure damaged the artery in Manie's leg.

Right before Manie's open heart surgery the doctors put Manie on blood thinners. Shortly after putting Manie on blood thinners they were able to detect a pulse in Manie's foot. Manie kept his leg. [read on for more of Manie's story and the heartbreak that came from his mother's Paxil prescription]

Four years ago today, the MOTHERS Act was about to fail for the second time in Congress. Why now do we suddenly have so much overwhelming support for this bill?

The Mothers Act is pending legislation that will indoctrinate hundreds of thousands of mothers into taking dangerous psych drugs. It is a great example of how the Big Pharma lobby controls Congress to the detriment of health, as well as needlessly and dramatically inflating the costs of our health care system for everyone. Like any piece of legislation it purports to address a troubling issue - in this case the mood distress of mothers following birth known as postpartum depression. It is true that 10% - 15% of women need some assistance in dealing with this topic - but the majority of them sure don't need it from Big Pharma. That is the Big Lie.

The Mothers Act (S. 1375: Mom's Opportunity to Access Health, Education, Research, and Support for Postpartum Depression Act) has the net affect of reclassifying the natural process of pregnancy and birth as a mental disorder that requires the use of unproven and extremely dangerous psychotropic medications (which can also easily harm the child). Urgent consumer action (see below) is needed to stop this atrocity, as the Senate could now vote any day...

Rather unbelievably up to this point is that the cause of defeating this legislation has fallen onto the shoulders of one young mother, Amy Philo. When she struggled with postpartum stress she was placed on the very same psych drugs advocated for use in the Mothers Act legislation. She began having violent thoughts towards her child and suicidal thinking. Her not very bright doctor had her double and then triple her dose, nearly killing her.
