PFAS, the “Forever Chemicals” making us sick

PFAS, or per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances, are a group of over 14,000 chemicals that have become widespread in our environment, primarily due to their water- and grease-resistant properties. Products featuring PFAS include non-stick cookware, waterproof clothing, cleaning products, and firefighting foams. These chemicals are so persistent that they can take years — or even forever — to break down. Traces of PFAS have been found in more than 97% of people in the United States, and even small amounts can be highly toxic.

The documentary “The poison in us all” explains how this began, the court cases, and the sad outcomes for unborn babies, and children. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t8qGtEVh7oQ

PFAS exposure has been linked to serious health issues including:

-Cancer: pancreatic, liver, and testicular cancer.

-Elevated cholesterol levels leading to heart disease.

-General lowered immune system response, making individuals more susceptible to illnesses.

Dr. Clark warned us years ago not to use Teflon dental tape. Teflon, non stick cookware, water-resistant/repellant clothing, cleaners, degreasers, microwave popcorn bags, cosmetics, scotch-guarding on furniture all contain PFAS. The firefighting foam used in airports all contains PFAS.

The issue is that all of these chemicals find their way into the ground, then into the water supply, and never comes out. How do we even begin to end exposure to this? Why are we not more aware of this danger?

The Clean Water Action NGO has this recommendation – “Ditch the non-stick cookware — even if it says PFOA (a type of PFAS) Free. When heated at high temperatures, PFAS-containing cookware gives off fumes that are serious enough to cause flu-like symptoms in people and even kill pet birds. Don’t be fooled by PFOA-free labels, as that may just mean that the PFOA was replaced by another PFAS. Stainless steel and cast iron cookware are great alternatives.”

Let me know if this topic has been helpful. I know Dr. Clark would have addressed it, and we will have more to say about PFAS in the next newsletter, including helpful links and practical tips for us all.
